Dr. Venkatessh Ramakrishnan

Dr.Ramakrishnan was part of the research team that managed to capture the first image in the history of a supermassive black hole, an astronomical milestone that was unveiled in 2019. Thanks to this great work, he received the Recognition Medal from the Senate of Chile, in addition to obtaining the Breakthroug Prize. To this was added the recognition of the University of ConcepciĆ³n, which highlighted the contribution of the scientist to the house of studies.

Venkatessh Ramakrishnan is a postdoc working alongside Prof Neil Nagar. He joined the Astronomy department by September 2016. He studies the supermassive black holes in the nearby Universe and also the one lurking in the centre of the Milky Way (Sgr A*). One of his primary tools for research is the event horizon telescope. He also works on the connection of the jet outflows and the feedback processes in active galaxies, primarily using ALMA.

Research Expertise & Interests:
1. Physics of accreting systems powered by black holes that also dissipates jets
2. Connected and Long Baseline Interferometry
3. Total Intensity & Polarisation observations
4. Statistical tools using (non-) Bayesian methods
5. Image & Signal Processing under sparse reconstruction framework
